What is the best wedding invitation design?
The best wedding invitation design is one that matches the style of your wedding, is easy to read, and has a clear hierarchy: the couple’s names first, then the date and time, then the venue. It should also match the rest of your stationery (RSVP card, details card, menu and thank-you card), so every piece looks like part of one set.
There is no single best look. A ballroom wedding calls for gold and formal type, a garden wedding for watercolor flowers or greenery, and a beach wedding for something light and playful. The motif (the main graphic element, such as a flower, a frame, a monogram or a pattern) is what ties the suite together, so choose one motif and repeat it on every card.
Every suite below includes a 5 x 7 inch invitation with matching detail, RSVP, thank-you and menu cards, except the boarding pass designs, which are a single ticket-style invitation.
Wedding invitation styles compared

| Rustic and boho | Greenery, dried flowers, paper textures | Handwritten script, simple serif | Sage, cream, terracotta, brown | Barn, vineyard and outdoor weddings |

Wedding invitation layout and wording
Most wedding invitations follow the same layout, from top to bottom. The couple’s names are the largest element; everything else is smaller and set in a simpler font.
- Host line: who is hosting, for example the bride’s parents, both families, or “Together with their families”.
- Request line: “request the honour of your presence” for a religious ceremony, or “invite you to celebrate” for a less formal one.
- Couple’s names: the focal point, often in a script font.
- Date and time: written out in full for formal invitations (“Saturday, the twelfth of June”), or in numbers for modern ones.
- Venue: the name of the ceremony venue, then the address.
- Reception line: “Reception to follow” or “Dinner and dancing to follow”.
- RSVP: the reply-by date and how to reply. Many couples put this on a separate RSVP card or a wedding website.
Sample wedding invitation wording (formal):
Mr. and Mrs. James Miller
request the honour of your presence
at the marriage of their daughter
Emily Rose
to
Daniel Thomas Brooks
Saturday, the twelfth of June
at four o’clock in the afternoon
St. Mary’s Church, Springfield
Reception to follow
Sample wedding invitation wording (modern):
Together with their families
Emily & Daniel
invite you to celebrate their wedding
Saturday, June 12 · 4 PM
The Glasshouse, Springfield
Dinner and dancing to follow
Kindly reply by May 1
Wedding invitation inserts: keep the main card clean and move extra information to inserts. A details card holds directions, parking, accommodation and the wedding website; an RSVP card holds the reply-by date, guest name line and meal choices; a menu card goes on the tables on the day; a thank-you card is sent after the wedding. Each suite on this page includes all four inserts in matching designs.
Wedding invitation design tips
- Use the standard size. 5 x 7 inches is the most common wedding invitation size and fits an A7 envelope. Inserts are usually smaller, such as 5 x 3.5 or 4 x 6 inches.
- Choose good paper. A heavy card stock (300 gsm or more) feels like a keepsake. Cotton, textured or matte paper suits floral and rustic designs; smooth white or pearl paper suits gold and formal ones.
- Pair a script with a serif. Use a script for the names and a simple serif or sans serif for the details, and stop at two fonts. See our romantic fonts and script fonts, or luxury fonts for a gold, formal suite.
- Keep the text readable. Do not set the date and address in a thin script, keep body text at 9 to 11 pt, and check the contrast of light text on watercolor backgrounds.
- Repeat one motif. Use the same flower, frame or monogram on the invitation, inserts, envelope and day-of signage.
- Think about the envelope. A colored envelope, a liner, a wax seal or a printed return address finishes the suite. Weigh one finished invitation before buying stamps.
- Get the print specs right. Send the printer a CMYK file at 300 DPI, with 0.125 in (3 mm) bleed and all text at least 0.125 in inside the trim. Order a printed proof before the full run.
- Plan the timeline. Send save the dates 6 to 8 months before the wedding (8 to 12 months for a destination wedding) and invitations 6 to 8 weeks before, with the RSVP date 3 to 4 weeks before the day.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best wedding invitation design?
One that matches your wedding style, is easy to read and puts the names, date and venue in a clear order. Floral watercolor and classic serif designs are the most popular; gold designs suit formal weddings and boarding passes suit destination weddings.
What is the standard wedding invitation layout?
From top to bottom: host line, request line, the couple’s names, date and time, venue, reception line and RSVP details. Directions, accommodation and the wedding website go on a separate details card.
What size is a wedding invitation?
The most common size is 5 x 7 inches. RSVP and detail cards are usually 5 x 3.5 inches or 4.25 x 5.5 inches. The suites on this page use 5 x 7 inches for the invitation and 5 x 3.5 inches for the inserts.
What is a wedding invitation motif?
The main graphic element repeated across the stationery, such as a flower, a wreath, a gold frame, a monogram or a pattern. A consistent motif makes the invitation, inserts and signage look like one set.
When should wedding invitations be sent?
Send invitations 6 to 8 weeks before the wedding, and save the dates 6 to 8 months before. For a destination wedding, send save the dates 8 to 12 months ahead and invitations about 3 months ahead.
Can I edit these wedding invitation templates in Word or Canva?
No. The suites are Adobe Illustrator files and the boarding pass designs come as Illustrator and Photoshop files. Fonts are free, so you can install them and edit all text.
