What makes a modern business card?

A modern business card keeps the information short and lets the design carry the brand: one strong color or pattern on one side, and a clean layout with the name, title and contact details on the other. Many now add a QR code and use a vertical format to stand out.

  • Two clear sides: a brand side (logo, color, pattern) and an info side.
  • Short contact details: name, title, phone, email, website. Skip the fax.
  • A QR code to a website, portfolio, booking page or digital contact.
  • Bold color or geometric shapes instead of stock clip art.
  • Readable type: at least 7 to 8 pt for contact details.

Business card ideas

  • Go vertical. A portrait card looks different from most cards in a wallet.
  • Use one bold color edge to edge on the brand side.
  • Repeat your logo as a pattern on the back.
  • Add a photo if you are the brand: consultants, agents, artists and stylists.
  • Show your work: a tiny portfolio grid for photographers and designers.
  • Add a QR code that saves your contact or opens your booking page.
  • Try special finishes: matte, spot UV, foil or rounded corners when printing.

Business card design tips

  • Keep the logo simple so it works small; see our logo fonts.
  • Use no more than two fonts and two or three colors.
  • Prioritise: name and title biggest, contact details smaller, everything aligned.
  • Check contrast so light text on a color stays readable in print.
  • Export as PDF with bleed and crop marks for the printer.
  • Match your other materials: use the same colors on your company profile and flyers.
