What is a company overview?
A company overview is a short description of a business: what it does, who it serves, where it operates and what makes it different. It usually runs from one paragraph to one page and appears at the start of a company profile, a business plan, a pitch deck, an investor report or the About page of a website.
Think of it as the elevator pitch in writing. Someone who reads only the company overview should understand the business well enough to decide whether to read on, call or invest.
What to include in a company overview
| Element | What to write |
|---|---|
| Who you are | Company name, year founded, location and legal form if relevant |
| What you do | Your products or services in one or two plain sentences |
| Who you serve | Your main customers, industries or markets |
| Mission and values | Why the company exists and how it works |
| What makes you different | Your strengths, approach or unique offer |
| Proof | Key numbers: clients, projects, team size, growth, awards |
| Where next | Goals or vision, and how to get in touch |
Company overview example
Here is a sample company overview you can adapt. Replace the details with your own and keep it short:
Northline Studio is a branding and web design agency founded in 2016 in Melbourne. We help small and mid-sized businesses in hospitality, health and retail look as good as the work they do. Our team of 14 designers, writers and developers has delivered more than 300 brand identities and websites for clients across Australia and Southeast Asia. We work in short, transparent stages, so clients always know what is next and what it costs. Our goal is simple: design that brings in customers, not just compliments.
Notice the order: who and where, what, for whom, proof, how and why. That is the structure most strong company overviews follow.
How to improve your company overview section
- Lead with what you do, not your history. The founding year can wait until the second sentence.
- Write for the reader. Mention the problems you solve for customers, not only your own goals.
- Use real numbers. Clients, projects, years and results are more convincing than adjectives.
- Cut jargon. “We build websites for restaurants” beats “we deliver end-to-end digital solutions”.
- Keep it short. One strong paragraph on the web; one page in a printed profile.
- Add a visual. A team or workplace photo and two or three key stats make the page easier to read.
- Update it every year. New numbers, services and clients keep it credible.
