What is a magazine?

A magazine is a periodical publication, printed or digital, that comes out on a regular schedule (weekly, monthly or quarterly) and mixes articles, photos and advertising around a theme or audience. It is an example of print media, like newspapers, but it is designed to be kept and browsed rather than read once.

Magazines are grouped by audience. Consumer magazines cover interests like fashion, travel, sport and food. Trade and business magazines serve an industry or profession. Company or in-house magazines are published by an organisation for its staff, customers or members. The examples below cover all three.

Parts of a magazine, page by page

Almost every magazine follows the same structure. Use this list to read the examples below, or as a plan for your own issue:

  1. Front cover: masthead (the magazine’s name), cover photo, cover lines teasing the main stories, issue number and date, and a barcode for retail copies.
  2. Contents page: a list of articles with page numbers, often with small photos.
  3. Editor’s letter: a short welcome from the editor introducing the issue’s theme.
  4. Front section: short news, trends and product picks, one or two per page.
  5. Feature articles: the long stories, each opening on a spread with a large photo, a headline, a standfirst and pull quotes.
  6. Columns and regular sections: interviews, reviews, recipes or tips that appear every issue.
  7. Back section: events, directory or contributors page.
  8. Back cover: usually a full-page ad, or the magazine’s own promotion and contact details.

Magazine design tips

  • Keep the masthead the same every issue. Readers find the magazine by its name and color. Change the cover photo and cover lines, not the logo.
  • One strong cover image. A face looking at the camera, with space around it for the cover lines.
  • Use a grid. Two or three columns on every page, with the same margins and gutters, keep the issue consistent.
  • Open features on a spread. A full-page photo on one side and the headline and first paragraph on the other.
  • Vary the pace. Alternate busy news pages with calm feature spreads, so the reader never gets tired.
  • Limit the fonts. One font for headlines, one for body text, and use weights and sizes for everything else.
  • Plan the page count early. Decide the number of pages (a multiple of 4 for stapled issues) before you start laying out.
