What is an extra bold font?
Extra bold (also written ExtraBold or Ultra Bold) is a font weight heavier than bold. In the standard 100 to 900 weight scale it is 800, between bold (700) and black (900). Many display fonts are drawn in a single extra bold or black weight, so the whole font is heavy.
What makes a bold font work well:
- Thick, even strokes that stay solid at large sizes.
- Open counters (the holes in a, e, o) so heavy letters stay readable.
- Tight but not crowded spacing, so words read as one strong shape.
- Personality: retro curves, texture, brush strokes or sharp cuts make a heavy font memorable.

Bold vs extra bold vs black
| Weight name | CSS number | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Semibold | 600 | Subheadings, buttons |
| Bold | 700 | Headings and emphasis in text |
| Extra bold / Ultra bold | 800 | Large headlines, logos, posters |
| Black / Heavy | 900 | Short display words, packaging, maximum impact |
Weight names are not fully standard: one font’s black can be lighter than another’s extra bold. Always compare fonts by eye at the size you will use them.
How to use extra bold fonts
- Use them big and short. Extra bold works best for a few words: a headline, a logo or a product name.
- Pair with a lighter font. Set body text in a regular or light weight so the bold font stands out.
- Loosen the spacing slightly. Heavy letters can crowd together at small sizes; add a little tracking.
- Watch the contrast. Bold type on a busy photo still needs a clear color contrast.
- Match the mood. Retro serifs feel warm, textured slabs feel rugged, brush fonts feel energetic.
