What is a handwriting font?
A handwriting font (or handwritten font) is a typeface designed to look like it was written by hand with a pen, marker or brush. Unlike a regular font, the letters vary slightly in shape, slant and stroke, which gives text a personal, human feel. In typography, typefaces with the characteristics of handwriting are called script typefaces.
Types of handwriting fonts
| Type | What it looks like | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Casual (print) | Separate letters, like everyday handwriting with a pen or marker | Packaging, menus, kids’ brands, social media |
| Cursive | Joined-up letters that flow into each other | Logos, invitations, product names |
| Monoline and signature | Thin, single-weight pen strokes, like a real signature | Personal brands, photographers, email signatures |
| Brush | Painted with a brush, with texture and thick-thin contrast | Posters, headlines, apparel |
| Calligraphy | Formal pen strokes with strong contrast and swashes | Weddings, certificates, luxury brands |
| Hand lettering | Bold, drawn letterforms built for display | Logos, badges, signage |
For formal pen styles see our calligraphy fonts, and for flowing, decorative scripts our script fonts.

How to use handwritten fonts professionally
- Use it for one thing. A logo, a headline, a name or a short quote. Set body text, prices and details in a clean sans serif or serif.
- Go big. Handwriting fonts lose detail at small sizes. Keep them at headline size, and test anything under 18 pt.
- Never use all caps in a cursive. Joined-up letters are not designed for it and become hard to read. Casual and brush caps fonts are the exception.
- Use the alternates. Swap in alternate letters so repeated letters (like the two l’s in “hello”) don’t look identical. That is what makes it look truly handwritten.
- Match the font to the brand. Brush feels energetic, monoline feels refined, casual feels friendly. Choose the mood first, then the font.
- Check the license. Make sure your license covers the use, especially for logos, products for sale and large print runs.
