The font on your posts, Reel covers and stories is often the first thing that makes someone stop scrolling. 17 best fonts for Instagram by UI Creative: Sticky Sugary, Graveyard, Retrograde and Porsha Richela

Every font on this page:

  • Fonts made by UI Creative
  • File formats and app support listed under each font (most include OTF and TTF files that work in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Word)
  • Made for designs: use them in the app you create your posts, Reel covers and stories in, then upload the image

What font does Instagram use?

Instagram uses a few different fonts, depending on where you look. In 2022 the company introduced its own brand typeface, Instagram Sans, which appears in its branding and in some in-app text options. Much of the everyday app interface still uses your phone’s system font, such as San Francisco on iPhone and Roboto on Android.

  • The logo: the Instagram wordmark is custom script lettering, not a font you can install. The older wordmark is often matched to the Billabong script font.
  • Story and Reel text: the in-app text tool offers a set of named styles such as Classic, Modern, Neon, Typewriter and Strong, and Instagram adds or renames styles from time to time.
  • Captions, comments and bio: these are plain text and show in the app’s default font. You cannot pick a font for them inside Instagram.

Because the built-in choices are limited, most creators and brands design their posts and story graphics in another app with a font of their choice, then upload the finished image or video.

Instagram trends move fast, but a few font styles keep showing up on popular accounts, Reels and carousels:

  • Retro serifs: soft, heavy 70s-style serifs like Sticky Sugary and Retrograde. Probably the most recognisable trending Instagram font style of the last few years.
  • Elegant high-contrast serifs: thin hairlines and thick stems for an editorial, magazine look.
  • Minimal serifs and clean sans serifs: calm, understated type for brands, often in all caps with wide spacing.
  • Handwritten and script fonts: for a personal, friendly touch on quotes and stories; see our script fonts.
  • Bold display fonts: big, chunky headlines that read instantly on a Reel cover; see our display fonts.

How to use custom fonts on Instagram

Instagram does not let you upload a font file, so how you use a custom font depends on where it should appear.

  1. Posts and carousels: install the font on your computer, design the post in Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma or Canva (upload the font as a brand font if your plan allows it), export a JPG or PNG and upload it. Ready-made Instagram post templates and carousel templates make this faster.
  2. Stories and Reel covers: design the story or cover as an image at 1080 x 1920 px with your font, then add it in the app. Our aesthetic Instagram story backgrounds are a good starting point. The text you type inside the Stories editor can only use Instagram’s own styles.
  3. Reels: add titles in a video editor that uses your installed fonts, then export and upload the video.
  4. Bio, captions and name: these only accept text, so a font file cannot be used. Online “Instagram font generator” tools swap your letters for look-alike Unicode symbols that resemble bold, italic or script letters. Use them sparingly: some phones show empty boxes, screen readers may read them out badly, and the text may not show up in search.

Tip: keep one or two fonts for your whole feed. Using the same headline font on every post is what makes a grid look consistent and recognisable.

Frequently asked questions

What font does Instagram use?

Instagram’s brand typeface is Instagram Sans, introduced in 2022. Much of the app interface uses your phone’s system font (San Francisco on iPhone, Roboto on Android), and the logo is custom script lettering.

What is the trending font on Instagram right now?

Soft, bold retro serifs are one of the most popular Instagram font styles, alongside elegant high-contrast serifs and clean minimal fonts. Sticky Sugary, Retrograde and Retrospection are good examples of the retro look.

What are the Instagram story font names?

The Stories text tool includes styles such as Classic, Modern, Neon, Typewriter and Strong, and Instagram adds new styles over time. To use any other font, design your story as an image first.

What is the best font for Instagram posts and Reels?

Pick a bold, readable font for headlines, because most people see your post small on a phone. Retro serifs like Kampingo or Sticky Sugary work well for Reel covers; elegant serifs like Graveyard or Romanize suit fashion and beauty posts.

Can I use these fonts in my Instagram bio?

Not directly. The bio only accepts text, so font files cannot be used there. Font generator websites imitate fonts with Unicode symbols, but they may not display on every device. Use these fonts in your post and story designs instead.
