What makes a good cafe menu?

A good cafe menu is short, easy to scan and matches the feel of the cafe. Customers spend only a minute or two reading it, so the layout matters as much as the food.

  • Clear sections: coffee, tea and other drinks, then food, then extras, each with a visible heading.
  • A focused list: roughly 5 to 7 items per section is easier to choose from than 20.
  • One strong visual: a hero photo, an illustration or a bold headline, not all three.
  • Readable type: a characterful heading font with a plain font for items and prices.
  • The cafe’s personality: colors, paper and fonts that match the interior and branding.

Cafe menu ideas

Whatever template you start from, these ideas make a cafe menu feel more personal and help it sell:

  • Signature drinks: give one or two house drinks their own box with a name and a short description.
  • All-day breakfast or brunch: a separate section for eggs, toast, bowls and pastries.
  • Seasonal specials: a small, changeable block (like the autumn special above) keeps the menu fresh without reprinting everything.
  • Bakery and sweets: list cakes, croissants and cookies near the coffee, where people decide on add-ons.
  • Non-coffee drinks: tea, matcha, chocolate, juices and smoothies for customers who do not drink coffee.
  • Milk and extras: a short line for oat or almond milk, extra shots and syrups, with prices.
  • A QR code: link to an online menu, ordering page or your Instagram.

Creative cafe menu section names

Section names are an easy way to add personality. Keep the plain word nearby so customers still understand them.

How to design a cafe menu

  • List and group your items. Decide the sections first, then trim each to the best sellers.
  • Pick a format. A single A4 page suits small cafes; a front-and-back menu fits food and drinks separately; a landscape layout works well on a clipboard or wall.
  • Choose a style that matches the cafe. Cream and serif for cozy and aesthetic, bold color for modern, dark backgrounds for evening dining.
  • Place the most profitable items where eyes land first: the top right and the first item of each section.
  • Keep prices simple. Drop the currency sign and use whole numbers or one decimal, aligned in a column.
  • Use your own photos. Swap the template photos for your real dishes, or use fewer photos and more type.
  • Print a test copy. Check the text size at arm’s length and in the cafe’s lighting before printing in bulk.

Frequently asked questions

What should be on a cafe menu?

The cafe name and opening hours, coffee and other drinks, food and bakery items with prices, any milk or extra options, and contact details or a QR code. Add a small specials section if you change items often.

How many items should a cafe menu have?

Small cafes usually do best with 5 to 7 items per section and two to four sections. A shorter menu is faster to order from and easier to keep fresh.

What size is a cafe menu?

A4 (21 x 29.7 cm) is the most common size, and every template on this page is A4. For US printing, a letter-size page is very close; check the margins before printing.

Can I edit these menus without Photoshop?

Yes. Open the PSD file in Photopea, a free browser-based editor that reads Photoshop layers. Most templates also include an Adobe Illustrator file.

Can I use these menu templates in Canva or Word?

No. They are Photoshop and Illustrator files. Use Photoshop, Illustrator or the free Photopea to change the text, prices, colors and photos.

Are the food photos included?

No. The photos in the previews are placeholders. Replace them with photos of your own dishes or with licensed stock images.
