What is a catalog?

A catalog (also spelled catalogue in British English) is a document that lists a company’s products or services, usually with a photo, name, short description, specifications and price for each item. Customers use it to browse the range and decide what to order.

A catalog is different from a brochure. A brochure introduces the business and its services in a few pages; a catalog is a complete, organized list of what you sell. Many companies have both. For the brochure side, see our company brochure examples.

What to include in a product catalog

  1. Cover: brand name, collection or season, and one strong product or lifestyle photo.
  2. Welcome and contents: a short note about the collection and a table of contents by category.
  3. About the brand: your story, materials, craftsmanship or sustainability in one page.
  4. Product pages: photo, product name, code or SKU, size, materials, color options and price, in the same position on every page.
  5. Lifestyle pages: products shown in use, to help people imagine owning them.
  6. Best sellers and new arrivals: highlight what you most want to sell.
  7. How to order: website, QR code, showroom address, delivery, returns and contact details.

Print and digital catalogs

Most catalogs today exist in both forms. The same design file can be printed for showrooms, trade fairs and mailing, and exported as a PDF for your website, email and WhatsApp.

Catalog design tips

  • Organize by how customers shop. Group by category, room, collection or price, and show it in the contents page.
  • Keep product pages consistent. Same photo size, same position for name and price, same background. Consistency makes comparing easy.
  • Shoot products the same way. Same light, angle and background for every item; lifestyle photos can vary.
  • Lead with best sellers. Put your strongest products in the first spreads, where readers spend the most time.
  • Make ordering easy. Product codes, a QR code to the online shop and contact details on every spread, not just the back cover.
  • Leave white space. A catalog that crams ten products on a page looks cheap. Give premium products room.

Frequently asked questions

What is a catalog example?

Any document that lists a company’s products or services with photos, descriptions and prices. IKEA’s furniture catalog and a fashion brand’s seasonal lookbook are well-known examples. The templates on this page are editable catalog examples for different industries.

Is it catalog or catalogue?

Both are correct. Catalog is the usual American spelling and catalogue the British one. They mean the same thing.

What is the difference between a catalog and a brochure?

A brochure introduces a business in a few pages. A catalog lists the full product or service range with details and prices, so customers can choose and order.

How do I make a digital catalog?

Design it as a print catalog, then export it as an interactive PDF with links and QR codes, or upload the PDF to a flipbook service. See the section above.

Can I edit these catalog templates in Word or Canva?

No. They are Adobe InDesign files (INDD and IDML). You need InDesign to change text, colors and images. Preview photos are not included; use your own product photos.
